The tattoo Historical Origins of Body Art Designs
Who was the first tattoo? Nobody knows.
The word is derived Samoa or the Polynesian word "tatau". The first written mention of tattoos in the book is written by the naturalist Joseph Banks, who accompanied Captain James Cook during his explorations in the 1700s. But art designs of the body have been since the dawn of humanity.
The mummified body of a man who lived in the Alps some 5300 years ago was tattooed with dots and lines. Egyptian mummies in the world in the same period are complex artwork on their arms.
The Picts, a people who lived in Scotland during the late Iron Age and medieval times, were famous for their tattoos. At the time, there was no specific word for drawings in Latin or English early. Julius Caesar has described the Picts as "scarification".
In Japan, the art of tattoo is believed to have originated about ten thousand years ago. Yet it is the exploration of Polynesia which is credited with bringing the Word and practice in Western societies.
