The Tools
Using our electrically powered tattoo machine, a needle moves up and down like in a sewing machine, carrying ink into your skin.  It is fitted with a solid needle that punctures the skin at the rate of 50 to 3,000 times a minute.

Sterilized needles are installed in the machine and dipped in ink, which is sucked up through the machine’s tube system.  It is carefully powered by a foot switch.

Since any puncture or wound to the skin has the potential for infection, precise attention is paid to sterilization.  The only acceptable method of sterilization for killing every living microorganism is an autoclave, a heat/steam/pressure unit (used in hospitals) that achieves and maintains 250 degrees Fahrenheit (121 C) under 10 pounds of pressure for 30 minutes or up to 270 F (132 C) under 15 pounds of pressure for 15 minutes.  See a picture of ours in the studio.

All reusable materials, such as the needle bar and the tube, are completely cleaned by putting them into special pouches and sterilized in the autoclave.

The Process
Here's what you can expect to take place when come by Coko Tattoo Studio and talk to friendly staff.

First, you'll take a look through our extensive collection of artwork.  Our staff can direct to books with your design in mind.  Once you select an image.  Our staff can customize it by adding or removing elements, adjusting size and colors and offer other helpful suggestions.  This service is excellent for first time tattoos.

Second, you'll set up an appointment leaving a non-refundable deposit.  You'll receive instructions regarding shaving and skin preparation.  Be sure to follow them.

Third, when you arrive at your appointment, we'll have everything ready for you.  First, the artist will apply a stencil of the artwork to ensure the tattoo will be exactly where you want it.  If not, the stencil can be wiped clean and re-applied.

With your approval, the artist will permanently tattoo the black outline of the stencil.  This is followed by the coloring and shading process.  Within a short time, your tattoo is complete.

Fifth, and lastly, you'll receive skin care instructions from our staff and you can make you final payment.  With proper care, your tattoo will remain a dazzling personal statement that's as unique as you are.

Does it hurt?
Yes, getting a tattoo could be described as a mild burning sensation.  It is not anything most people would find intolerable.  The amount of discomfort varies somewhat based on which part of the body is being tattooed.  The more relaxed you are, the less pain.

Should I worry about getting AIDS from a tattoo?
In a professional licensed tattoo studio that is clean and sterile, this isn't an issue.  Check to be sure the tattoo studio follows a single service use policy.  Any quality artist will always follow these procedures and work in a sanitary environment.  That is why you should spend the money to get tattooed at a professional tattoo studio rather than getting tattooed by your friend's roommate etc.  Bacterial infections, hepatitis and worse are serious health issues in dirty and unsanitary places.

If I gain or lose weight, will it affect my tattoo?
It can affect your tattoo but since your skin can stretch a lot, it would take a significant change to make a significant difference.

How much does it cost?
Good tattoos are expensive but remember tattoos last forever.  With that in mind, you shouldn't just rush into getting just any tattoo design.  Take you time finding or designing something you'll like and spend whatever it costs.  You shouldn't skimp by going to a lousy artist because its cheap.  Spend the money and get a quality tattoo.  You'll be happier than getting a lousy tattoo because it was cheap.  Prices are based on size, location, complexity and time involved.  You will usually be charged by the hour for large and detailed work.

Can I protect my tattoo from fading and sun damage?
A tattoo done by a top professional will last a lifetime if you follow our aftercare instructions and always use sun block.  The sun can ruin your tattoo if you don't use sunscreen.  You can have your tattoo touched up to give it new life.

Can a tattoo be removed?
Yes, laser technology can remove most tattoos.  However, removal is very expensive and does leave scars.  Cover-up tattoos are another option.  The old tattoo can be covered and redesigned into something new.

If you have any questions feel free to stop by our shop, call us or contact us via email.  We'll do our best to answer your questions and accommodate your requests.  We look forward to etching your next tattoo.
